A rally racing enthusiast who has participated in the FIA World Rally Championship, Edwin Hammond Meredith participates in a range of extreme sports, including snowboarding, skateboarding, and surfing. Edwin Hammond Meredith also rescues dogs and ferrets. Considered an exotic pet, ferrets are curious and often comical in nature, and do best in pairs or groups.
When considering a ferret as a pet, you’ll first want to check your local laws and regulations. In some places, such as California and New York City, ferrets are illegal to keep. Others may require only a permit. Next, consider cage size. As ferrets spend so much time in their cages, the largest possible cage is best. In addition, ferrets prefer their litter boxes in corners, so opt for a rectangular or square cage. Ferrets also require time outside their cage to play and explore. Any opening large enough for a ferret's head is wide enough for them to get into, so you will need to thoroughly ferret-proof any room they are allowed into. It’s important to note that recliners are deadly to ferrets, as they can climb into the mechanisms underneath and be killed when someone uses the foot rest. Finally, think about getting more than one ferret. Although ferrets spend up to 20 hours sleeping, they do best when they have members of their own species to play with.
