A recent study published in the Communications Biology journal determined that a valuable type of bacteria living in the ocean responsible for producing ten percent of the planet’s oxygen is affected by plastic pollution. Scientists conducted a laboratory study in which they exposed two strains of the bacteria that live at different ocean depths to chemicals from PVC matting and grey plastic grocery bags. They learned that the chemicals which leach from these plastic products interfere with the photosynthesis, genetic expression, growth, and oxygen production of the Prochlorococcus bacteria. Marine plastic pollution is a significant problem that is getting worse and estimated to cause over $13 billion in damages annually to the marine ecosystem. The data from this study highlights the fact that plastic pollution is not only affecting macro-organisms such as turtles and seabirds but is having a more extensive ecosystem impact.
